Conquering Disability 18-year-old Vivek makes it to IIT-Delhi

Vivek Kumar ALLEN Student

18 year old Vivek Kumar has set up an example for all of us who give up on our dreams even because of a small hiccup. Despite having been left disabled with his right hand at the age of 3, Kumar has made it to Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Delhi after the recent first counseling round held by the JEE governing body.

Hailing from a middle class family of Lahuar village in Bihar’s Rajgir district, Kumar met with an accident at the age of three when he was going with his father, Jagdish Prasad on his scooter which left his right hand injured and handicapped.

Vivek secured All India Rank (AIR) 25 in the OBC category and AIR 82 in the physically challenged category in the recently declared JEE Advanced 2016 results, due to which he got admission in IIT Delhi in the Civil Engineering branch.

Vivek admits that his studies got affected and was late in getting admission in school. “I used to attend classes once a month and could study up to only Class 5 as a regular student due to my ongoing treatment at that time. After that I continued studying at home with the help of private tuitions,” he says.

Physiotherapists and doctors treated him for eight years but finally they give up being unsuccessful in treating him, post which even he stopped going to the doctors, told his elder sister, Ankita, who is doing her post graduation in Chemistry from Bihar.

Due to his disability he was always dependent on family members back home in the village but he managed on his own in Kota where he stayed alone for coaching and worked dedicatedly towards achieving his dream.

According to Vivek Kumar, life was never easy as a disabled person but he always kept his focus on his studies. He was often ridiculed and mocked by his classmates at school for not able to carry his own school bag but he disregarded their taunting and continued to focus on his studies.

I was inspired further by my elder brother after scoring a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average point of 10 in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 board exams and came to Kota for coaching for IIT-JEE entrance exams. But my challenges did not end in Kota as my health deteriorated due to disability and I was forced to leave coaching in the middle 2013 and return home” reminisces Vivek.

I then scored 84.4% marks in my 12th boards and returned to Kota as I hadn’t stopped dreaming for making it big some day. While in Kota, I never lost hope and never stopped working hard. I got full support from my teachers and the management at ALLEN with the help of which I have finally made it to the IIT.” says an ecstatic Vivek.

He feels that Kota Coaching system is unbeatable and the environment here is exactly what is needed for the preparation of entrance examinations. ALLEN’s system furthermore is so helpful that continuously guides the students coming here and appears as one big family, a home away from home.
