The NTA (National Testing Agency) score is calculated using a specific formula. It is determined based on the percentile rank of candidates.
Before understanding the NTA score, it’s essential to comprehend how it’s derived. The NTA score is calculated by multiplying the total number of candidates present in a shift by 100 and dividing it by the number of candidates with scores equal to or less than the candidate under consideration. This process is done for each subject individually, including Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Since JEE-Main exams are conducted in multiple shifts, the difficulty level may vary across shifts. Therefore, raw scores are normalized to calculate percentile scores, ensuring fairness across all shifts.
After calculating raw scores for each candidate, the number of candidates with equal or lower raw scores is determined. This count is then multiplied by 100, divided by the total number of candidates in the shift, and expressed as a 7-decimal percentile score, which constitutes the candidate’s NTA score.
The NTA score not only reflects a candidate’s overall performance but also determines their subject-wise scores in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
The NTA score plays a crucial role in determining a candidate’s ranking in the JEE-Main examination. It is essential for candidates appearing in both the January and April sessions, as the All India Rank is based on the maximum NTA score obtained across both sessions
