Computer Science Dominates Choices Among Top 500
The admission pattern of JEE Advanced 2026’s highest-ranked candidates highlights the overwhelming popularity of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE).
According to findings cited from the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) report, 365 students among the top 500 rankers, or 73%, opted for Computer Science and Engineering at different IITs.
The figures underline how strongly CSE continues to dominate the preferences of students who secure the highest All India Ranks in JEE Advanced.
The gap between Computer Science and other branches is particularly significant among the top 500 candidates. Electrical Engineering was selected by 58 students, accounting for 11.6%, while Mechanical Engineering attracted 38 students, or 7.6%. Mathematics and Computing was chosen by only one student (0.2%). Meanwhile, several other courses recorded relatively smaller numbers of admissions among the top-ranked candidates.
Civil Engineering witnessed one of the lowest preferences among the top 500 JEE Advanced 2026 rankers. Only two students, or 0.4% of the top 500, opted for the branch.
The sharp difference compared with Computer Science reflects the changing priorities of high-performing engineering aspirants, particularly their preference for technology-oriented programmes and career opportunities associated with the digital and technology sectors.
The JIC report also provides insights into the IITs preferred by the highest-ranked students. Among the top 10 JEE Advanced 2026 rankers, five reportedly secured admission to IIT Delhi.
The remaining top-rankers were distributed among other leading IITs, reflecting the strong attraction of the older IITs among students who achieve exceptional ranks in the country’s toughest engineering entrance examination.
The preference for leading IITs is not restricted to the top 500. Among the top 5,000 JEE Advanced 2026 rankers, 2,460 students chose the seven IITs highlighted in the report.
IIT Madras attracted 764 students, followed by IIT Delhi with 587, IIT Kharagpur with 482, IIT Bombay with 477, IIT Kanpur with 454, IIT Roorkee with 411 and IIT Guwahati with 285. These figures demonstrate the continued appeal of the country’s established IITs among high-ranking candidates.
The admission data points towards a strong preference for technology-focused academic programmes among India’s top engineering aspirants.
Computer Science alone accounted for nearly three-fourths of the choices in the top 500, while Electrical and Mechanical Engineering followed at considerably lower levels.
The trend highlights the growing importance students attach to technology, computing and related career opportunities while selecting their IIT branch.
The JEE Advanced 2026 admission trends also underline the importance of securing a high rank for students targeting their preferred IIT and branch.
With a large number of top-ranked candidates competing for a limited number of seats in popular programmes such as Computer Science, even a small difference in JEE Advanced rank can influence branch and institute options.
The JIC findings therefore provide aspirants with a clear picture of the intense competition for the most sought-after IIT courses.
