Candidates with AIR 13.90 Lakh and AIR 14.97 Lakh Secure NIT Seats
The third round of JoSAA Counselling 2026 has shown that engineering aspirants with comparatively higher All India Ranks (AIRs) can still secure admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs).
The ongoing counselling process is being conducted for 67,323 seats across 134 premier institutions, including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs). The latest round of seat allotment highlights that candidates should not lose hope solely because of a higher rank, as Home State quotas and female supernumerary seats continue to create admission opportunities.
Third Round Online Reporting and Document Verification
Candidates allotted seats in the third round were required to complete online reporting by 5:00 PM on July 8, 2026. Students whose uploaded documents were found to have discrepancies during verification must respond to the queries raised by the authorities by 5:00 PM on July 9, 2026.
Failure to submit the required clarifications or documents within the deadline will result in cancellation of the allotted seat, making timely verification crucial for all candidates.

Male Candidate with AIR 13.90 Lakh Gets NIT Mizoram Seat
According to career counselling experts at ALLEN Career Institute, a male candidate with an All India Rank (AIR) of 13,90,116 under the Gender Neutral Pool has secured admission to the Chemical Engineering programme at NIT Mizoram in the Open Category through the Home State quota.
The allotment demonstrates that candidates with relatively higher ranks can still obtain seats in NITs depending on institute-wise seat availability, quota, and branch preferences.
Female Candidate with AIR 14.97 Lakh Secures Electronics Seat
In another notable allotment, a female candidate with an AIR of 14,97,738 secured admission to the Electronics and Communication Engineering programme at NIT Mizoram through the Female Supernumerary Pool under the Home State quota in the Open Category.
The allotment reflects the significant role played by female supernumerary seats in improving access to engineering education for women across NITs.

IIT Closing Ranks Offer Valuable Admission Insights
The third round of JoSAA counselling also revealed important closing rank trends for IIT admissions. Under the Gender Neutral Pool, the five-year Chemical Sciences programme at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad closed at AIR 17,102. Meanwhile, under the Female Pool quota, the Materials Science and Engineering programme at IIT Jammu closed at AIR 27,754.
These closing ranks provide useful benchmarks for candidates evaluating their admission chances in future counselling rounds.
CSAB Counselling to Begin After JoSAA Ends
After the completion of JoSAA Counselling 2026, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) will conduct special counselling for vacant seats available in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. The CSAB counselling process will be held in two rounds, providing another opportunity for candidates who were not allotted a seat during JoSAA or who wish to secure admission against the remaining vacancies in the NIT system.

CSAB 2026 Registration and Important Dates
Registration and choice filling for CSAB Counselling 2026 will be conducted from July 28 to August 5, 2026. The list of vacant seats remaining after the completion of JoSAA counselling will also be released on July 28, enabling candidates to make informed choices while filling their preferences. The entire CSAB counselling process is scheduled to conclude by August 17, 2026.
Higher AIR Does Not End Admission Chances
The latest JoSAA Round 3 allotment clearly demonstrates that a higher All India Rank does not necessarily eliminate the possibility of securing admission to a reputed engineering institute.
Through Home State quotas, female supernumerary seats, and branch-specific seat availability, many candidates continue to receive NIT admissions even with higher AIRs.
Aspirants who are unable to secure their preferred seat in JoSAA should actively participate in CSAB Counselling 2026, which offers another valuable opportunity to gain admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
