NIT IIIT seat availability as per AIR Ranks

Students securing an All India Rank (AIR) of less than 5,000 in JEE Main 2026 results are likely to secure a seat in the core branches of the top 5 NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Allahabad, and Jaipur) or at IIIT Allahabad.

Students with an All India Rank (AIR) between 5,000 and 10,000 are likely to secure core branches at NITs such as Calicut, Surat, Nagpur, Bhopal, Kurukshetra, and Rourkela, in addition to other branches at the top 5 NITs mentioned earlier.

Students whose AIR is projected to fall between 10,000 and 20,000 have a good chance of securing core branches at NITs like Jalandhar, Jamshedpur, Delhi, Goa, Agartala, Hamirpur, and Durgapur; furthermore, they may also secure core branches at institutes such as IIIT Gwalior, Jabalpur, Guwahati, Lucknow, PEC Chandigarh, BIT Mesra, IIEST Shibpur, JNU, and Hyderabad University.

Students with an AIR between 20,000 and 30,000 may find opportunities to secure core branches at NITs like Patna, Raipur, Silchar, Uttarakhand, Srinagar, Andhra Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh—in addition to other branches at the top 10 NITs—as well as admission to newer IIITs located in Trichy, Nagpur, Pune, Surat, Bhopal, Vadodara, Ranchi, etc.

Criteria for determining AIR Revised after three years due to Tie-Breaker Rules

After a gap of three years, changes have been implemented in the criteria used to determine rankings in instances where students achieve identical (tied) high NTA scores. This year, seven criteria were established; specifically, if two students obtain identical total NTA scores.

The NTA score in Mathematics is the primary factor considered for determining their All India Rank. If these scores are also identical, the Physics score is considered next, followed by the Chemistry score, and subsequently, the ratio of correct to incorrect answers.

In the event of a tie at this stage, the subject-wise ratio of correct to incorrect answers in Mathematics is examined; should a tie persist, the ratio for Physics is considered, and if a tie remains even after that, the ratio for Chemistry is used.

In instances where a tie persisted across all the aforementioned criteria, the students were assigned the same All India Rank; consequently, several students emerged this year who achieved a perfect score of 300 out of 300, and all of them were awarded All India Rank 1.
