Amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the country’s largest medical entrance exam, NEET-UG 2026, the central government has made a major announcement.

Days after the exam was cancelled following allegations of paper leaks and irregularities, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced that the NEET exam will be conducted entirely in computer-based (CBT) mode from next year.

This decision is being considered a significant step towards increasing transparency and security in medical entrance exams.

Why was the NEET UG 2026 exam cancelled?

The NEET-UG 2026 exam, held on May 3, 2026, faced serious allegations of paper leaks and rigging. After reports of exam question paper leaks emerged from several states, students and parents demanded the cancellation of the exam

Following this, the National Testing Agency (NTA) decided to cancel the exam on May 12, 2026. Given the seriousness of the matter, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was entrusted with the investigation.

The government stated that protecting the interests of meritorious students is its top priority. This led to the decision to reschedule the exam.

Addressing a press conference, Dharmendra Pradhan stated that any shortcomings found in the exam process would be immediately rectified. He also acknowledged that some security breaches had occurred.

He stated that NTA will be held accountable, strict action will be taken against those involved in the paper leak, students should not believe rumors and the examination system will be further strengthened.

The minister also clarified that technological changes are necessary to prevent such incidents in the future. For this reason, the decision has been taken to make the NEET exam computer-based.

The National Testing Agency has announced that the NEET UG 2026 Re-Exam will be held on June 21, 2026.

This time, the exam time has been extended by 15 minutes compared to the previous time to provide students with additional flexibility in solving questions.

Students will have the option to choose their exam center

Keeping in mind the convenience of students regarding the re-exam, the government has taken a major decision. The Education Minister stated that this time, students will be able to select their preferred exam centre. This move brings relief, especially to students who faced difficulties in the previous exam due to remote centres.

Concerns among Students and Parents

The cancellation of the exam has affected the preparation and mental well-being of millions of students.

Many students had been preparing for the medical entrance exam for a long time, and the sudden cancellation has increased their stress.

However, the government has assured that the re-exam will be conducted in a completely safe, fair, and transparent manner.

CBI Investigating

The investigation into the paper leak case is now under the control of the Central Bureau of Investigation. The investigating agency is trying to determine how the question paper was leaked and who was involved.

Several major revelations are expected once the investigation is complete.
