Arnav Gautam has Participated in Several Olympiads and Won Several Medals
Excelling in engineering entrance examinations is not merely a result of completing the syllabus; rather, it is built upon a deep understanding of subjects, analytical thinking, and consistent practice.
This very principle is clearly evident in the success of Arnav Gautam from Kota. Arnav, who secured All India Rank 5 in JEE Main 2026, believes that his Olympiad preparation fortified his conceptual understanding to such an extent that his subsequent JEE preparation became far more systematic and effective.
Olympiads are not merely competitions; they serve as a medium to guide students into the depths of a subject.
In India, Science and Mathematics Olympiads are conducted in multiple stages, beginning at the school level and progressing through national and international selection rounds.
The questions in these examinations are not based on rote learning, but rather on a clear grasp of concepts, logical reasoning, and problem-solving abilities.
During their Olympiad preparation, students encounter challenging and multi-layered problems.
This very process teaches them how to break down any complex problem into smaller, manageable parts in order to solve it. This specific skill subsequently plays a decisive role in examinations like the JEE.
Arnav Gautam has been associated with the classroom program at ALLEN Career Institute for the past six years.
From the very beginning, he emphasized understanding concepts rather than relying on rote memorization. After securing 95.8 percent marks in Class 10, he approached his preparation with even greater seriousness.
He participated in various Olympiads, such as the Junior Science, Astronomy, and Physics Olympiads, and proved his mettle by reaching the OCSC (Orientation-cum-Selection Camp) level.
Winning a Bronze Medal at the international level in the Asian Physics Olympiad 2025 stands as a testament to his hard work and profound understanding.
His Olympiad preparation taught him that simply solving a problem is not enough; understanding the underlying principle behind it is far more crucial.
This very approach became his greatest strength in the JEE. Olympiad vs. JEE: What’s the Difference and How Did It Help?
Both the Olympiad and JEE are rigorous examinations, yet they differ in their approach. While time management and accuracy are paramount in the JEE, the Olympiad tests for depth of understanding and innovative thinking.
According to Arnav, when a student prepares for the Olympiad, they have already practiced complex, high-level problems. Consequently, JEE questions begin to feel relatively simpler and more familiar.
This not only boosts self-confidence but also significantly reduces the pressure felt during the actual examination.
In the examination conducted by the National Testing Agency, Arnav secured 295 out of a possible 300 marks.
He achieved perfect scores in Physics and Mathematics, while his score in Chemistry was slightly lower due to a single question. Despite this, his focus remained fixed on his ultimate goal rather than solely on the immediate result.
He firmly believes that JEE Main is merely a preliminary stage, and the true challenge lies in delivering a stellar performance in JEE Advanced.
A major contributing factor to Arnav’s success was his disciplined lifestyle. Recognizing the value of time, he made several decisions that are typically considered difficult.
He prioritized his studies over socializing with friends and consciously distanced himself from unnecessary distractions.
He even refrained from learning how to ride a motorcycle to eliminate any potential for distraction. Furthermore, he chose not to attend the ceremonies to collect the numerous medals and awards he had won in various Olympiads, as he deemed his study time to be of far greater importance.
Arnav structured his daily routine to ensure that his physical health remained intact alongside his academic pursuits.
He consumed light meals to avoid lethargy but never compromised on his sleep. He firmly believed that the brain functions at its full potential only when it receives adequate rest.
After a full day of studying, he would play cricket, which served as a means for both physical fitness and mental relaxation.
While many students are susceptible to the pressures of social expectations or stress, Arnav chose to transform his solitude into a source of strength.
He turned to writing as a means to express his thoughts. Whenever he felt stressed, he would write poetry and engage in a dialogue with himself.
This habit helped him maintain his mental equilibrium and also fostered the capacity to study continuously for extended periods.
The sacrifices and struggles of his family played a pivotal role in Arnav’s success. His father, Dr. Buddhi Prakash Gautam, serves as a Guest Faculty member at the University of Kota; for years, he supported the family while working under challenging circumstances. His mother is a government school teacher who has always prioritized education.
This family environment inspired Arnav to pursue his goals with unwavering dedication.
Arnav believes that success cannot be achieved through self-study alone, nor solely through coaching; a balance between the two is essential. While self-study fosters a deep understanding of the subject matter, the guidance of experienced teachers aids in comprehending complex problems.
Arnav aims to pursue a B.Tech in Computer Science from IIT Bombay. He intends to continue his future preparations in an even more focused and concentrated manner.
