Why Has JEE Main Session-2 Become a “Rank Booster”?

Find Out What ALLEN President, Jeevan Jyoti Agarwal Sir Has to Say

Why Has JEE Main Session-2 Become a Rank Booster

Regarded as the country’s largest engineering entrance examination, JEE Main is no longer merely a test; it has evolved into a game of strategy, time management, and continuous improvement for students.

With the introduction of two sessions for JEE Main over the past few years, a significant shift has been observed in both the preparation strategies and the goals of students. In particular, the majority of students now view Session-2 as a “Rank Booster Attempt.”

Elaborating on this subject, Vice-President Jeevan Jyoti Agarwal Sir explained that while the primary objective for most students today is to qualify for JEE Advanced, they simultaneously strive to secure a better rank in JEE Main Session-2 in order to gain admission into their desired branches at the top NITs and IIITs.

Session-1 Has Now Become a “Diagnostic Test”

A large number of students across the country are unable to complete their entire syllabus by January. Consequently, these students utilize Session-1 as an opportunity to assess the level of their preparation.

Following Session-1, students gain a clear understanding of the examination pattern, the difficulty level of the questions, and the nuances of time management. This is precisely why they approach Session-2 with greater confidence and a more refined strategy.

However, there is another side to this coin. Since students become familiar with the examination format after their first attempt, the competition regarding “Marks vs. Percentile” becomes even more intense in Session-2.

Often, students are required to score higher marks than before just to achieve the same percentile.

The Real Battle for Top Ranks among 1.5 Million Students

Approximately 1.5 million students appear for the JEE Main examination every year.

Among them, there is a specific group of 60,000 to 80,000 students whose primary focus is to improve their rank and secure a coveted branch at one of the premier NITs or IIITs.

Experts believe that the students who benefit the most from Session-2 are those who scored between the 70th and 80th percentile in Session-1.

Such students, by working on their weaknesses, achieve remarkable improvement in their second attempt, often reaching very high percentile scores.

Conversely, for students scoring above the 98th percentile, the scope for improvement may indeed be narrower; however, even this marginal improvement can bring about a significant shift in their rank and college selection.

To secure admission into popular branches, such as Computer Science, AI, or Data Science, at top NITs and IIITs, a difference of even a few marks can prove decisive.

Board Exams: A Major Contributor to Success

The Board examinations, which take place between JEE Main Session-1 and Session-2, also play a pivotal role in a student’s preparation journey.

Jeevan Jyoti Agarwal explains that while preparing for Board exams, students study NCERT textbooks in great depth.

The benefits of this approach are most evident in the subject of Chemistry; students’ accuracy in answering NCERT-based questions improves, enabling them to secure higher marks in less time.

This is precisely why many students perform better in Chemistry during Session-2, thereby significantly boosting their overall percentile score.

Students’ Career aspirations are Evolving

Over the past 4 to 5 years, a significant shift has been observed in students’ preferences.

While traditional branches at older NITs—such as Electrical, Civil, and Chemical Engineering—were previously considered the most popular choices, the landscape is now changing rapidly.

Today, a large number of students are prioritizing modern, future-oriented branches such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Mathematics & Computing.

Many students now view these courses at newer IIITs or top-tier private universities as superior alternatives to the traditional branches offered by older institutions.

The rapidly expanding opportunities within the technology and digital sectors have further reinforced this shift.

What Is the Greatest Advantage of Having Two Attempts?

The provision of two attempts for JEE Main has brought considerable psychological relief to students. Previously, a student’s entire future was perceived to hinge upon a single examination.

If a student were to fall ill prior to the exam or succumb to stress on the day of the test, their entire academic year could be jeopardized.

Now that students have a second opportunity, the pressure of an “all-or-nothing” scenario has been significantly alleviated.

The experience gained in Session 1 makes them feel calmer and more self-assured in Session 2. Consequently, instances of anxiety and panic within the examination hall are observed less frequently compared to the first attempt.

However, this also brings with it a new layer of pressure. Often, both students and parents harbour expectations of a better performance in the second attempt, which intensifies the pressure to perform.

Which Subject Determines the Rank?

Each of the three subjects in JEE Main plays a distinct role, and every subject exerts a unique influence on the final outcome.

Chemistry Emerges as the “Rank Decider”

Chemistry is often regarded as the “rank decider” because it allows students to solve a greater number of questions in a shorter amount of time.

If students establish a strong command over the NCERT syllabus, achieving an excellent score in this subject becomes highly attainable.

Mathematics Sets Students Apart

Mathematics is considered the most challenging subject in JEE Main. This is precisely why Mathematics frequently serves as the “rank separator.”

Students who successfully and accurately solve the difficult questions in this section are the ones who truly distinguish themselves from the crowd.

Physics: Relatively Easier

In JEE Main, the difficulty level of Physics is generally considered to be formula-based and straightforward.

If one’s concepts are clear and formulas are practiced regularly, it is possible to secure good marks in this section.

What Should Be the Strategy for Session-2?

Experts believe that students should conduct a thorough analysis of their mistakes following Session-1.

Real benefits are derived not merely from taking mock tests, but from focusing specifically on improving performance in weaker chapters.

Time management, NCERT revision, solving previous years’ questions, and regular analysis of mock tests play a crucial role in helping students achieve a better percentile in Session-2.

JEE Main Session-2 is no longer just a second attempt; it has evolved into a monumental opportunity for students to improve their ranks and secure admission to better colleges.

Through the right strategy, self-analysis, and consistent practice, students can demonstrate remarkable improvement in their second attempt.

Experts anticipate that the significance of Session-2 will continue to grow in the coming years, as the level of competition becomes increasingly intense and students’ career choices evolve rapidly.
