The term ‘Final Round for IITs‘ simply means that after the Round 5 seat allotment, JoSAA will not conduct any further counselling rounds for IIT admissions. Even if a few IIT seats remain vacant after this round, there will be no additional JoSAA counselling to fill those vacancies.

Candidates who receive an IIT seat in Round 5 must complete all admission formalities and report to their allotted institute within the prescribed timeline. This announcement is specific to IITs and IISc and should not be confused with the seat upgradation process for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.

Will NIT, IIIT and GFTI Seats Be Upgraded in Round 5?

The answer is yes. Candidates holding seats in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs are still eligible for seat upgradation during JoSAA Round 5, provided they have opted for the appropriate willingness option such as Float or Slide, depending on their circumstances.

If vacancies arise because higher-ranked candidates move to better institutes or branches, those vacant seats will continue to be allotted to eligible candidates in the fifth round. Therefore, Round 5 is not exclusive to IIT admissions; it is an important upgrade opportunity for students across all participating institutes.

Why Round 5 Often Brings the Maximum Seat Movement

Should Students Freeze Their Seats After Round 4?

Candidates should avoid freezing their seats simply because they believe no further upgrades are possible. If you are currently allotted an NIT, IIIT, GFTI or even an IIT but are hoping for a better branch or institute, keeping yourself eligible for upgradation is usually the wiser choice.

Freezing a seat prematurely may prevent you from receiving a better allotment in Round 5. Unless you are completely satisfied with your present seat and have no interest in further upgrades, it is advisable to remain in the counselling process.

What Happens After JoSAA Round 5?

Although Round 5 marks the end of IIT admissions through JoSAA, the counselling process for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs does not conclude entirely. After the completion of JoSAA counselling, CSAB Special Counselling is conducted to fill the vacant seats remaining in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. This provides another valuable opportunity for candidates who either wish to secure admission to a better institute or could not obtain a satisfactory seat during the JoSAA rounds.

Why CSAB Special Counselling Is Important

Every year, a considerable number of seats become vacant after the completion of JoSAA counselling due to withdrawals and non-reporting by candidates. Through CSAB Special Counselling, these vacant seats are reallocated to eligible students.

In previous years, many candidates with comparatively lower ranks have secured admissions in reputed NITs and other centrally funded technical institutes through this process. Therefore, students should continue monitoring official counselling announcements even after the completion of JoSAA Round 5.
