According to Career Counselling Expert at ALLEN Career Institute, the second round of JoSAA Counselling 2026 has once again demonstrated that admission opportunities depend not only on rank but also on category, quota, institute preference, and branch availability.
Under the Gender Neutral Pool, a candidate with AIR 13,90,116 in the Open Category secured admission to NIT Mizoram in the Chemical Engineering branch through the Home State Quota. Similarly, under the Female Pool, including Supernumerary Seats, a female candidate with AIR 14,97,038 was allotted the Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) branch at NIT Mizoram under the Open Category Home State Quota.
These allotments highlight how various reservation policies and seat matrices create opportunities even for candidates with comparatively higher ranks.

Expert explained that candidates whose institute category has changed in the second round will undergo a fresh verification process. Students who have moved from an IIT to an NIT or from an NIT to an IIT will have the documents uploaded during the first round verified once again by the authorities responsible for the newly allotted institute system.
The newly allotted seat will be confirmed only after successful completion of this second verification process, ensuring that all eligibility requirements are satisfied before admission is finalized.

Candidates who had already been allotted a seat in the first round and had chosen either the Float or Slide option, but received another seat within the same institute category—such as IIT to IIT or NIT to NIT—are not required to upload their documents again.
Since their documents have already been verified during the earlier reporting process, the newly allotted seat is confirmed on the basis of the existing verified records. This simplifies the reporting process for candidates who receive upgrades within the same system.

JoSAA continues to provide flexibility to candidates regarding their willingness to participate in subsequent counselling rounds.
Students who have selected the Float option may change it to either Slide or Freeze in the upcoming rounds, while candidates who have selected Slide may later change their option to Freeze if they are satisfied with their allotted seat.
This flexibility allows candidates to make informed decisions based on seat availability, branch preference, and institute choice during each round of counselling.
With multiple rounds of counselling still remaining, candidates are advised to keep a close watch on every update released through the JoSAA portal. Timely completion of online reporting, prompt response to document verification queries, and careful selection of Float, Slide, or Freeze options are essential for securing admission.
Missing any deadline or failing to submit the required documents within the stipulated time may result in cancellation of the allotted seat, making it crucial for students to remain vigilant throughout the counselling process.
