IIT Kanpur offers Cyber Security UG Course on JEE Main Score Basis

No JEE Advanced Score is Required for Enrolment in this New Course of IIT Kanpur

In a major development for engineering aspirants across India, IIT Kanpur has announced a new undergraduate program in Cyber Security that does not require candidates to qualify through JEE Advanced.

The institute has launched a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Cyber Security (B.Cyber) program, offering admissions based solely on JEE Main scores. This initiative is expected to create new opportunities for students interested in one of the fastest-growing technology domains while expanding access to IIT education.

The first batch of the program is scheduled to commence in the current academic session, and eligible students can apply until June 25.

Admission Based on JEE Main Scores

Traditionally, admission to IITs has required candidates to clear both JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

However, IIT Kanpur’s newly launched Cyber Security program breaks this pattern by selecting candidates through their JEE Main performance. Applications are open to students who appeared in JEE Main 2025 or JEE Main 2026.

Based on their ranks and scores, shortlisted candidates will be invited for an additional admission assessment conducted by the institute before final selection.

This move is expected to benefit thousands of students who perform well in JEE Main but may not secure admission to IITs through the conventional route.

Important Admission Timeline

Candidates interested in applying for the B.S. in Cyber Security program should keep track of the following schedule:

  • Last date to submit applications: June 25
  • Shortlisted candidates announced: June 28
  • Admission test and selection process: July 5
  • Reporting at IIT Kanpur: July 8
  • Commencement of academic activities: July 21

Students are advised to complete their applications well before the deadline to avoid last-minute issues.

Unique Four-Year Structure with Industry Exposure

The B.S. in Cyber Security program has been designed to combine academic learning with practical industry experience. The four-year course is divided into two major phases:

First Two Years: Academic Foundation at IIT Kanpur

Students will spend the initial two years on campus, learning the fundamentals of cyber security, computer systems, networking, digital security, and related technologies.

The curriculum has been developed to provide a strong theoretical and practical foundation in cyber security.

Final Two Years: Internship and Industry Integration

The remaining two years will focus heavily on internships and hands-on industry exposure. This structure will allow students to work on real-world cyber security challenges and gain valuable professional experience before graduation.

Such an industry-oriented model is expected to improve employability and prepare students for the rapidly evolving cyber security landscape.

Flexible Exit Options and Credit-Based Certifications

One of the most attractive features of the program is its flexible academic structure. Students will have multiple exit options based on the number of credits earned.

  • 150 Credits: Certificate Award
  • 200 Credits: Diploma Award
  • Completion of Full Program: B.S. Degree in Cyber Security

The maximum duration for completing the program has been set at six years, providing flexibility to students. In exceptional circumstances, an additional one-year extension may also be granted.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

Students must fulfil the following eligibility requirements to apply:

  • Valid JEE Main 2025 or JEE Main 2026 score.
  • Completion of Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM).
  • Basic understanding or background in Cyber Security is desirable.
  • Candidates who have completed Class 12 through recognized open schooling systems are also eligible.
  • Applicants must be born on or after October 1, 2001.
  • Admission is open only to Indian nationals.

Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee admission, as candidates will also need to clear the institute’s screening and selection process.

Why Cyber Security Matters More Than Ever

As India rapidly expands its digital infrastructure, cyber threats have become a growing concern for businesses, government agencies, and individual users. Cyber fraud, data breaches, ransom ware attacks, and digital security incidents have increased significantly in recent years.

This growing demand has created an urgent need for skilled cyber security professionals who can protect critical digital assets and ensure the safety of information systems.

Recognizing this need, IIT Kanpur has designed the B.S. in Cyber Security program to develop highly trained experts capable of addressing modern cyber security challenges.

A Program Designed for Future-Ready Skills

Cyber security plays a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s digital ecosystem. He emphasized that the new program differs from conventional engineering courses by providing extensive industry exposure and practical learning opportunities.

The objective is not only to impart technical knowledge but also to help students develop industry-relevant skills that can support India’s growing cyber security workforce requirements.

A Significant Opportunity for Engineering Aspirants

The launch of IIT Kanpur’s B.S. in Cyber Security program represents a significant shift in engineering education admissions.

By allowing students to enter an IIT through JEE Main scores without requiring JEE Advanced qualification, the institute has opened a new avenue for talented candidates interested in cyber security.

With strong academic training, industry internships, flexible exit options, and a curriculum aligned with current technological demands, the program is poised to become one of the most sought-after undergraduate courses in the coming years.

For students aspiring to build a career in cyber security, digital forensics, information security, or cyber defence, this program offers an excellent opportunity to gain an IIT education while preparing for one of the world’s most in-demand professions.
