Olympiads are now a new path for admission in IITs
For thousands of engineering aspirants, clearing JEE Advanced remains the traditional gateway to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). However, exceptional performers in national and international science Olympiads now have another opportunity to enter one of India’s leading engineering institutions.
Apart from JEE Advanced examination, now a new path – International Olympiad – is opening up, which is becoming an option for admission into IIT. IIT Kanpur gave direct admission to five students, selected in international Olympiads in subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science, in its B.Tech. and BS courses in 2025.
No additional bridge course was required for these students nor did they have to take a tough exam like JEE Advanced. The selection was based only on Olympiad merit and a written assessment. As a result, these students are today studying at the IIT campus as part of the regular batch.

IIT Kanpur Finalises 14 Admissions Through Olympiad-Based Selection
The admission process under the Olympiad route concluded with the selection of 14 talented students for various BTech and BS programmes. The special admission drive attracted students who had excelled in recognised Olympiad competitions and met the institute’s eligibility requirements.
After applications closed on June 15, IIT Kanpur shortlisted 17 candidates for the next stage of the admission process. These students were invited to participate in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) conducted on the institute’s campus on June 24.
Out of the shortlisted candidates, one student did not appear for the examination, while two candidates were placed on the waiting list based on their overall performance. The remaining 14 students successfully secured admission under this unique category.

Computer-Based Test Played a Key Role in the Selection Process
Although Olympiad achievements formed the primary basis for eligibility, IIT Kanpur also evaluated candidates through a structured Computer-Based Test to assess their academic preparedness.
The examination lasted three hours and covered the three fundamental subjects required for engineering education:
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
Each subject contained 15 questions, ensuring that students demonstrated strong conceptual understanding across all core disciplines before receiving admission offers.
Students Join a Wide Range of Academic Programmes
The selected students have been distributed across multiple undergraduate programmes offered by IIT Kanpur, highlighting the diversity of academic interests among Olympiad achievers.
The admissions include:
- Six students in Computer Science and Engineering
- Two students in Biological Sciences and Bioengineering
- Remaining students admitted to programmes related to Mathematics, Chemistry, Intelligent Systems, and Data Science
The institute continues to use this admission route to attract academically gifted students into disciplines where analytical and research abilities play a significant role.
Departments Covered Under the Olympiad Admission Scheme
Unlike the regular JoSAA counselling process, the Olympiad Admission Scheme is available only for selected academic departments at IIT Kanpur.
Students admitted through this pathway can pursue programmes in departments such as:
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Biological Sciences and Bioengineering
- Chemistry
- Economic Sciences
- Mathematics and Statistics
These departments have been identified to encourage students with proven excellence in competitive science and mathematics to continue advanced academic and research-oriented learning.
What Is IIT Kanpur’s Olympiad Admission Scheme?
The Olympiad Admission Scheme is a specialised entry mechanism created for students who have demonstrated exceptional performance in recognised Olympiad competitions conducted at national or international levels.
Instead of competing through the highly competitive JEE Advanced examination, eligible Olympiad achievers receive an opportunity to apply directly for undergraduate programmes at IIT Kanpur.
The initiative aims to encourage young scientific talent by providing an alternative admission route that values conceptual understanding, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills developed through Olympiad participation.
Eligibility Conditions for Olympiad Admissions
Students seeking admission through the Olympiad pathway must satisfy several academic and administrative requirements.
Applicants are expected to meet the same age criteria applicable to JEE Advanced candidates. They must also have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics during their Class 12 education.
Additionally, students who have previously accepted admission to any IIT through the JoSAA counselling process or whose IIT admission was cancelled in the past are not eligible to apply through this scheme.
These eligibility norms ensure that the Olympiad route remains reserved for deserving first-time applicants with exceptional academic credentials.
A Growing Recognition of Merit Beyond Entrance Examinations
The Olympiad-based admission process represents an important shift in engineering admissions by recognising excellence beyond conventional entrance examinations.
Students participating in prestigious Olympiads often develop advanced conceptual knowledge long before entering college. By offering them a dedicated admission pathway, IIT Kanpur encourages innovation, scientific curiosity, and research aptitude at an early stage.
While JEE Advanced continues to be the primary admission route for most IIT aspirants, initiatives like the Olympiad Admission Scheme create additional opportunities for exceptionally talented students who have already proven their capabilities on national and international academic platforms.
What Happens Next?
The selected candidates will now complete the remaining admission formalities before joining IIT Kanpur for the 2026-27 academic session.
With this latest round of Olympiad admissions, IIT Kanpur continues to strengthen its commitment to nurturing academic excellence and broadening access for students who have distinguished themselves through high-level scientific competitions.
Initiatives of other IITs
After this move of IIT Kanpur, many other IITs are also experimenting in this direction:
- IIT Gandhinagar – Giving opportunities to Olympiad participants based on online
- IIT Indore – Looking for alternative admission routes.
- IIT Madras – Has started Science Olympiad Excellence Program from 2025-26. In
- this, two seats in every undergraduate subject will be reserved for Olympiad winners,
- out of which one seat will be given exclusively to female students.
- IIT Bombay – Offering direct admission to BS Mathematics program through Indian National Mathematical Olympiad.
These initiatives clearly show that IITs no longer want to rely on JEE alone, but are opening new avenues to provide opportunities to diverse talents.
