Big Relief for JEE Advanced Qualified Candidates
The decision is particularly beneficial for candidates whose board examination results are under re-evaluation, rechecking, retotaling, compartment examination, or improvement examination processes.
Many students who secured excellent ranks in JEE Advanced faced uncertainty because they could not meet the mandatory 75% marks criterion or Top 20 percentile requirement in their Class 12 board examinations at the time of JoSAA counselling registration.
Recognizing this challenge, IIT Roorkee has provided these candidates with an opportunity to retain their chances of admission to the IITs.
According to the latest guidelines issued by IIT Roorkee under the JoSAA Counselling Business Rules, candidates who were initially unable to satisfy the Class 12 eligibility requirements can still become eligible if they obtain revised marks before the specified deadline.
Students whose updated mark sheets reflect the required eligibility can submit the revised documents to IIT Roorkee through email on or before 15 July 2026, 5:00 PM.
Once their eligibility is verified, they will not lose the IIT seat that would have been allotted to them based on their JEE Advanced rank.
This initiative ensures that deserving candidates are not deprived of admission opportunities due to delays in board result revisions.
The announcement comes after numerous concerns were raised by students from various education boards, especially CBSE.
This year, several students reported discrepancies and unexpected outcomes in their board examination results.
Many candidates who were confident of scoring above the eligibility threshold found themselves short of the required percentage due to issues that later led them to apply for rechecking, retotaling, or improvement examinations.
At the same time, many of these students had performed exceptionally well in JEE Advanced and were in a strong position to secure seats in prestigious IITs.
Without a special provision, these candidates risked losing admission opportunities despite potentially becoming eligible after board result revisions.
IIT Roorkee’s decision addresses this gap and provides a fair opportunity to affected students.

The provision has been clearly mentioned in the JoSAA Counselling guidelines under the section dealing with the Change of Class 12 Passing Status for registered candidates.
The rule states that if a candidate’s eligibility status changes after the declaration of revised board examination results, and the student fulfills all eligibility requirements by the prescribed deadline, the candidature can be reconsidered for admission.
This means that candidates who were initially marked ineligible due to board marks can become eligible later if they successfully improve their score through any approved process.
The special provision can benefit candidates belonging to the following categories:
As long as the revised marks satisfy the IIT admission eligibility requirements and are submitted within the prescribed timeline, students can avail themselves of this opportunity.

The most critical date announced by IIT Roorkee is 15 July 2026, 5:00 PM. Candidates must ensure that:
Failure to submit the updated documents before the deadline may result in the loss of this special consideration.
One of the most reassuring aspects of this initiative is that eligible students will not be penalized for delays in board result revisions.
If a candidate becomes eligible after submitting the revised mark sheet, IIT Roorkee has clarified that the student can be considered for the same IIT seat or branch that would have been allotted according to their JEE Advanced rank during JoSAA counselling.
To accommodate such candidates, IITs may create a supernumerary seat, ensuring that deserving students do not lose admission opportunities due to circumstances beyond their control.
This is a remarkable step towards maintaining fairness in the admission process.

The timing of this provision is strategically aligned with the JoSAA counselling schedule. Since the final stages of seat allotment continue until mid-July, IIT Roorkee has allowed candidates additional time to resolve board examination eligibility issues.
The fifth and final round of JoSAA seat allotment is scheduled shortly after the deadline, making it possible for newly eligible candidates to be considered during the concluding phase of admissions.
Students who become eligible before the deadline can still remain in contention for IIT admissions based on their JEE Advanced rank and counselling choices.
The decision has been widely appreciated by students, parents, and academic experts. It reflects an understanding of the practical challenges students face during board result processing and revision procedures.
Rather than allowing technical delays to affect the future of meritorious candidates, IIT Roorkee has adopted a balanced approach that safeguards both academic standards and student interests.
For students who narrowly missed the eligibility criteria but are confident that their revised results will meet the requirements, this announcement offers a valuable second chance.
