The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released a revised MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic session, bringing a significant increase in the number of medical seats available across India.

The latest update adds 13,636 MBBS seats to the existing intake and takes the total number of approved MBBS seats to 1,40,664 across 839 medical colleges, excluding seats offered by Institutes of National Importance (INIs).

Government and Private Colleges Account for 1.40 Lakh Seats

The revised seat count includes 64,121 MBBS seats in government medical colleges and 76,543 seats in private medical colleges. Together, these seats form the approved MBBS intake covered by the latest NMC seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic year.

NMC Seat Matrix Covers 839 Medical Colleges

The updated matrix includes 839 medical colleges across the country. Of these, 447 are government medical colleges, while 392 are private institutions. The figures provide a broader picture of the MBBS seat capacity available for the ongoing admission cycle.

41 New Medical Colleges Bring Additional Seats

Newly established medical colleges have also contributed substantially to the increase. The revised matrix includes 41 new medical colleges offering a combined 3,850 MBBS seats. Among these, 13 are government institutions with 850 seats, while 28 private colleges account for the remaining 3,000 seats.

Karnataka Records Highest Seat Increase

The state-wise figures show that Karnataka has received the largest addition to its MBBS intake. The state has recorded an increase of 1,650 seats under the latest revision. Tamil Nadu follows with an addition of 1,250 seats, while Uttar Pradesh has gained 1,200 additional MBBS seats.

Rajasthan and Telangana Also See Major Additions

Rajasthan has witnessed an increase of 1,100 MBBS seats, taking its place among the states with substantial additions. Telangana has also recorded a significant rise, with 1,060 new seats included in the revised matrix. These additions could expand the range of options available to eligible NEET UG 2026 candidates during counselling.

Seat Increase Includes New Colleges and Existing Institutions

The latest revision is not limited to newly established medical colleges. The NMC has also incorporated approved increases in the annual intake of several existing institutions. These changes have been made following the applicable regulatory procedures and decisions taken through the relevant appeal mechanisms.

Medical Colleges Asked to Verify Updated Details

The NMC has instructed medical colleges to carefully examine the information included in the revised seat matrix.
