NEET UG 2026 Re-Exam Records Lowest Attendance in Recent Years
This means that approximately 2.79 lakh registered candidates did not appear, bringing the attendance percentage down to 87.75%. The sharp decline is notable because the original NEET UG examination held on May 3, 2026, had recorded an attendance of 22.05 lakh candidates, reflecting a much higher participation rate of 96.72%.
The NEET UG 2026 re-examination was conducted following allegations of question paper leaks and irregularities during the original examination. Acting on these concerns, the Ministry of Education directed that a fresh examination be held to ensure transparency and fairness in the admission process.
The NTA later confirmed that while over 22.79 lakh candidates had registered, only about 20 lakh students ultimately appeared for the re-test. The substantial reduction in attendance has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding this year’s medical entrance examination.

Education experts believe the attendance pattern in the NEET UG 2026 re-exam is unprecedented. An attendance rate of 87.75% means that nearly 12.25% of registered candidates remained absent, the highest absentee percentage recorded in the last five examination cycles.
Between 2021 and 2025, NEET UG consistently maintained attendance rates above 95%, except in 2022, when attendance stood at 94.23%. Even the NEET UG 2026 examination held on 3rd May witnessed a healthy 96.72% attendance, making the sudden fall during the re-examination particularly unusual.
This unexpected decline has prompted discussions among education experts, who believe the reasons behind such a significant drop deserve careful examination.

The lower number of candidates appearing for the NEET UG 2026 re-exam has also reduced the competition for MBBS admissions across the country.
With only around 20 lakh candidates taking the examination, the competition has become comparatively easier than in previous years, especially considering that the total number of MBBS seats has continued to increase.
Between 2023 and 2025, more than 20 lakh students appeared for NEET UG despite the availability of fewer medical seats. In contrast, 2026 offers more MBBS seats while attracting fewer examinees, resulting in a relatively improved candidate-to-seat ratio.
According to the latest seat matrix for 2026, India now has 823 medical colleges offering a total of 1,29,603 MBBS seats.

The reduction in the number of candidates appearing has positively impacted the overall competition ratio.
Based on the total registered candidates, the competition earlier stood at roughly 18 candidates for every MBBS seat. However, with only around 20 lakh students actually taking the re-exam, the ratio has now dropped to below 15 candidates per seat.
The improvement is even more noticeable for government medical colleges. Earlier, approximately 38 candidates competed for each government MBBS seat. After the re-examination attendance figures, this ratio has come down to nearly 32 candidates per seat.
Although government medical seats remain highly competitive due to their affordable fee structure, the reduced number of examinees offers comparatively better admission prospects for deserving candidates.

Government medical colleges remain the preferred destination for NEET aspirants because of their significantly lower tuition fees, better affordability, and established academic reputation.
Every year, a majority of high-ranking candidates compete for these institutions, making government MBBS seats far more competitive than private colleges.
Even with reduced competition this year, aspirants will still require strong NEET scores to secure admission into leading government medical colleges across India.

The sharp decline in attendance during the NEET UG 2026 re-examination may influence the overall counselling process, cut-offs, and admission trends. While final outcomes will depend on candidate performance, category-wise merit lists, and seat allocation during counselling, the lower number of examinees is expected to provide relatively better opportunities for serious aspirants.
Candidates are now advised to focus on the upcoming answer key, result declaration, and counselling schedule while keeping track of official notifications issued by the National Testing Agency and the Medical Counselling Committee.
The NEET UG 2026 re-examination has produced one of the most unusual attendance patterns in the history of India’s largest medical entrance examination. With over 2.79 lakh registered candidates absent and attendance falling to 87.75%, the re-exam has raised several important questions while simultaneously reducing competition for MBBS admissions.
As India now offers more than 1.29 lakh MBBS seats across 823 medical colleges, aspiring medical students may benefit from a relatively improved seat-to-candidate ratio. However, final admission opportunities will ultimately depend on merit, counselling outcomes, and category-wise seat allocation. Candidates should continue following official announcements and prepare for the next stages of the admission process.
