The CSAB Counselling 2026 Round 1 seat allotment has been announced, and candidates who have received a seat now need to complete the next steps carefully.

Choosing the wrong option during the online reporting process could lead to cancellation of the allotted seat and, in some cases, may also affect a seat secured through JoSAA.

Candidates should therefore understand the difference between Freeze, Float, Slide, Surrender and Withdraw before making their final decision.

The choice made during the CSAB online reporting process can have a direct impact on their admission prospects in the subsequent round.

CSAB Round 1: What Should Candidates Do After Seat Allotment?

After the CSAB Round 1 allotment, candidates can broadly be divided into different categories depending on whether they have received a seat and whether they already had a JoSAA seat.

Candidates Who Did Not Get Any Seat in CSAB

Students who have not been allotted any seat in the first round of CSAB counselling do not need to complete any additional admission process for an allotment. They should wait for the next round and check whether a seat is allotted subsequently.

Candidates should regularly check their CSAB counselling account for updates and follow the schedule announced by the counselling authority.

Students Who Already Have a JoSAA Seat

Some candidates may have participated in CSAB while already holding a seat obtained through JoSAA. If they have not received a new seat in CSAB and their JoSAA seat remains valid, they generally need to select the applicable willingness option as instructed by CSAB.

Candidates Getting a CSAB Seat for the First Time

Candidates who are satisfied with their allotted institute or branch but still want to explore better possibilities in the next round should carefully consider the Float or Slide options, wherever applicable.

Float: This option is generally relevant when a candidate wants to retain the allotted seat while remaining open to an upgrade in a subsequent round.

Slide: Candidates who are interested in the same institute but would prefer a better branch can consider the Slide option, subject to the applicable CSAB rules.

Freeze: Choosing Freeze means the candidate accepts the allotted seat and does not want to participate in further upgrades through the counselling process.

Students should avoid selecting Freeze simply because they have received a seat. If they believe that their allotment could improve in the next round, they should first understand the consequences of each option before locking their decision.

When Should Candidates Consider Surrender?

Surrender is a much more important decision and should not be selected casually.

A candidate may consider surrendering the allotted CSAB seat if they are completely unwilling to join the branch or institute allotted to them and want to seek an upgrade in the subsequent CSAB round.

However, surrendering the seat means giving up the current allotment. Any subsequent upgrade will be considered according to the applicable rules and the candidate’s eligible choices.

The major risk is that the candidate may not receive another seat in the next round. Therefore, students who surrender a CSAB seat must be prepared for the possibility of ending up without a CSAB allotment.

Candidates who also have a JoSAA seat should be particularly cautious. Before surrendering a CSAB allotment, they must understand whether their action could affect their existing admission status.

Withdraw or Exit if You Do Not Want CSAB Admission

Candidates who have decided that they do not want to participate further in CSAB counselling should consider the appropriate Withdraw or Exit option rather than unnecessarily remaining in subsequent rounds.

This is particularly important for students who have already checked their CSAB allotment and have another preferred college or admission opportunity available.

Candidates should also remember that participating in a subsequent round can have financial consequences. If a seat is allotted in a later round and the applicable rules do not permit a refund, the candidate could lose the amount paid.

Why Candidates Should Not Make a Hasty Decision
