JoSAA Counselling Commenced on 2nd June after the JEE Advanced 2026 Result Declaration on 1st June
After the JEE Advanced 2026 results were announced on June 1, 2026, the most important phase of the engineering admission process, counselling, has begun. JoSAA Counselling began on June 2, 2026, providing admission to the country’s prestigious engineering institutes.
For students who have successfully cleared the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams, this stage provides an opportunity to choose the right college and branch.
Understanding the counselling process and completing each step on time is crucial to securing a seat.
What is JoSAA Counselling and which institutes offer admission?
JoSAA, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, administers the admission process for premier technical institutions in the country. Students are admitted to a total of 128 institutions, including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. JoSAA counselling is conducted in six rounds.
The sixth round is the last opportunity for students seeking admission to IITs, as IIT seats are not allocated after this. Students are allocated seats based on their rank, category, and preferences.

What is CSAB Counselling and why is it important?
After JoSAA counselling concludes, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts special counselling.
Its purpose is to fill the remaining seats in NIT+, i.e., NITs, IIITs, IEST, and GFTIs. IITs are not included in CSAB counselling.
This process is conducted in three special rounds and is a crucial opportunity for students who did not receive their desired seat at JoSAA or who did not accept a seat previously.

First Step: Registration and Choice Filling
JoSAA Counselling begins with online registration. Students enter their information on the official portal.
After registration, they must prepare a priority list of colleges and engineering branches.
Students can enter any number of choices as per their wish, but it is essential to arrange them in priority order. Filling choices in the correct order can increase the chances of getting a better seat.

Mock seat allotment provides potential seat information
After Choice Filling, JoSAA provides students with Mock Seat Allotment. This is a trial process before the actual seat allocation, in which students can see which college and branch they can potentially get based on their rank and choices.
The purpose of Mock Allotment is to give students the opportunity to evaluate their choices and make changes if necessary.

Choice Locking: Securing Final Choices
Students can make changes to their choices after viewing the Mock Allotment.
Once they are satisfied with their final preferences, they are required to lock their choices within the stipulated timeframe.
Once the choices are locked, no changes can be made. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully review all choices before locking them.

How does the Seat Allotment Process work?
After Choice Locking is complete, the actual seat allocation process begins. JoSAA allocates seats in various rounds.
In each round, seats are allocated based on a student’s rank, category, choices filled, and available seats.
If a student does not receive a seat in the first round, they are automatically included in the next round. There is also a possibility of seat upgrade with each new round.
Online reporting and willingness options after receiving a seat
If a student is allotted a seat, they must report online. This process involves uploading the required documents and paying the Seat Acceptance Fee. Students then choose the Freeze, Float, or Slide option based on their preferences.
The Freeze option is for students who are completely satisfied with their allotted seat and do not wish to participate in further rounds. Students who choose the Float option accept their current seat while maintaining their chances of securing a better college or branch. The Slide option is for students who hope to remain at the same institution and receive a better branch.
Additionally, options such as Surrender, Withdraw, and Exit are also available, which students can use to surrender their seat or exit the counselling process.
Final Step: Physical Reporting and Admission Confirmation
After the online process is complete, students must report to their allotted institution on the scheduled date. During this process, original documents are verified and the remaining admission fee is deposited. After all formalities are completed, admission is confirmed and students can begin their academic journey.
Important Tips for Success in JoSAA and CSAB Counselling
Adhering to deadlines during counselling is extremely important. Students should regularly check the official website for updates.
When filling their choices, instead of focusing solely on popular institutes, they should also analyse their rank, interests, and previous years’ cutoffs.
Having the right strategy and making timely decisions significantly increases the chances of securing a good college and branch.
JoSAA and CSAB Counselling 2026 is one of the most crucial steps for engineering aspirants on their path to higher education.
By properly understanding and completing all the steps, such as registration, choice filling, mock allotment, seat allotment, online reporting, and physical reporting, on time, students can secure admission to their dream institute.
Therefore, pay special attention to each step of the counselling process and choose your options wisely.
