1.68 Lakh Candidates Filled over 2 Crore Choices
The first mock seat allotment for JoSAA Counselling 2026 has been released for millions of engineering aspirants across the country. This mock allotment gives candidates an opportunity to understand which institute and branch they are likely to get a seat in based on their current choice filling.
This process, released by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), aims to help students accurately evaluate their preferences before final seat allocation.
Over 1.68 Lakh Candidates Participated
A total of 168,615 candidates participated in this year’s first mock seat allotment.
Together, these students filled over 20 million choices for various branches and colleges of IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
This data indicates that JoSAA Counselling has become one of the largest and most competitive Counselling processes in the country. The large number of choices filled by candidates also indicates that students are now more aware and strategic about their career choices.
Chemical Engineering at IIT Kanpur secured AIR 3790
The data from the first mock seat allotment has provided several important insights.
For example, a student who secured an All India Rank of 3790 in JEE Advanced 2026 was assigned to the Chemical Engineering stream at IIT Kanpur. This information can prove useful for students assessing their chances of admission to an IIT with a similar rank.
IIT Kanpur is considered one of the top technical institutes in the country, and the Chemical Engineering stream has long been popular among students.

Artificial Intelligence at IIT Jodhpur with AIR 4955
Similarly, a candidate who secured an All India Rank of 4955 was assigned to the Artificial Intelligence stream at IIT Jodhpur.
The growing demand for fields like AI and machine learning has led to the growing popularity of Artificial Intelligence in the past few years.
With the expansion of AI-based technologies in the industry, students are increasingly prioritizing careers in this field, a reflection of which is clearly visible in the choice filling of JoSAA Counselling.
Mock seat allotment is only informational
According to experts, the purpose of mock seat allotment is only to give candidates an idea of possible results. It is not the final seat allocation.
Therefore, if a candidate does not receive a seat as per their expectations, there is no need to panic. The second mock seat allotment released by JoSAA will also be informational only.
Candidates are advised to review their choice filling within the stipulated timeframe and make changes to their preferences as needed.

Career Goals Play a Key Role in Choice Filling
Students’ choice filling during JoSAA Counselling is not based solely on rank but also on their long-term career goals.
Many students want to prepare for the civil services examination after engineering, while others aim to study abroad for higher education.
Some students want to pursue an MBA or management field. These students often prioritize the institute’s reputation and academic environment, placing the branch as a secondary priority.
The Environment of Prestigious Institutions Makes the Difference
Large and prestigious engineering institutes offer students diverse opportunities. They offer a competitive environment, experienced faculty, research facilities, and a strong alumni network. The environment at such institutes is considered particularly beneficial for students pursuing fields such as civil service, higher education, or management.
Furthermore, professors at many IITs and NITs have academic affiliations with foreign universities, helping students explore international higher education opportunities.

Branch Selection Given Priority for Corporate Careers
Students who wish to pursue jobs in the corporate sector directly after engineering typically prioritize fields that are in high demand in the industry.
Fields such as Computer Science Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, Electronics and Communications, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering have long been considered the strongest in terms of placement and career opportunities.
This is why the cut-offs for these fields are generally higher in JoSAA Counselling.
Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Increase Competition
Due to rapid changes in the technology industry, demand for fields like Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Machine Learning, and Data Analytics is constantly increasing.
Companies are looking for engineers who can work with modern technologies and contribute to digital transformation.
As a result, competition for AI and related fields at IITs and NITs has increased significantly.

Core Branches Most Popular in Previous Years
Looking at JoSAA data from previous years, core branches like Computer Science, Mathematics and Computing, Electronics and Communication, and Electrical Engineering have been the top choices of students.
Graduates from these fields remain in constant demand in fields like Software Development, Artificial Intelligence, Data Management, Product Development, and Resource Management.
Therefore, admission to these fields requires a high rank.
What is the future strategy for candidates?
After the first mock seat allotment, candidates should carefully analyse their choice list. If their preference for an institute or branch changes, they should revise it in a timely manner.
Instead of making decisions based solely on popular branches or prestigious institutes, students should consider their interests, abilities, and long-term career goals before making their final choices.
A proper strategy and balanced choice filling can prove to be the key to securing a good seat in JoSAA Counselling 2026.
The first mock seat allotment of JoSAA Counselling 2026 has emerged as an important indicator for candidates.
Over 20 million choices filled by over 1.68 lakh students indicate that competition in the engineering admission process is steadily increasing. Mock allotment data provides students with an opportunity to assess their prospects and make informed decisions.
Therefore, all candidates are advised to critically review their preferences before the second mock allotment and final seat allocation, and make informed decisions in accordance with their future goals.
