How to Fill College and Branch Choices
Students are given a single opportunity to fill choices for over 900 programs across 138 institutions during JoSAA counselling. Therefore, students should fill in as many college choices as possible in descending order of their preferences.
Students can assess college choice trends by looking at the opening and closing ranks of colleges in previous years. Students should also include college branches ranked below their closing rank in the college preference list based on their preferences.
Before filling in the college choices for JoSAA counselling, prepare a list of their preferred colleges on paper and evaluate it before submitting it online to avoid errors. Students must check their college choices before locking them, as changes will not be possible once they are locked.

The first allotment will be based on the open rank.
According to the business rules of JoSAA counselling, the first seat allocation will be based on the open rank of the college seats filled to all students based on their rank.
If a seat is not available through the open rank, students in category A will be allocated a college seat based on their category rank. Thus, students in category B can get a seat in both open and category B seats based on their rank.
Required Documents for Online Reporting
According to counselling expert at ALLEN Career Institute, after seat allocation in JoSAA counselling, students will be required to upload scanned 10th and 12th grade mark sheets, category certificates, photocopies of cancelled checks, medical certificates, etc. in the online reporting process.
EWS and OBC students will be required to provide a category certificate issued after April 1, 2026. Otherwise, their category will be cancelled and a seat will be allocated through the open rank.
