JEE Advanced Result Analysis—Know Cut-off, Toppers, Qualifying students

2,502 More Students Qualified for Counselling Than Last Year

EE Advanced 2026 Result AnalysisOn May 17th, the JEE-Advanced exam, conducted by IIT Roorkee, was held in 222 exam cities across the country and two abroad.

Career counselling expert at ALLEN Career Institute, stated that 179,694 students took the exam this year.

These included 139,131 boys and 40,562 girls. Of these, 56,880 students have been declared eligible for counselling.

These counselling-qualified students include 46,773 boys and 10,107 girls. Of the 56,880 students who qualified, 15,883 were from the general category, 12,385 from the OBC category, 6,377 from the EWS category, 15,856 from the SC category, and 6,379 from the ST category. This year, 2,502 more students qualified for counselling than last year. Last year, 54,378 students qualified.

Shubham Kumar Tops JEE Advanced 2026

This year, Shubham Kumar from the IIT Delhi Zone secured All India Rank 1 by scoring 330 out of 360. Aarohi Deshpande from the IIT Delhi Zone was the top ranker in the female category. She scored 280 and secured 77th rank in the common rank list.

Cut-off increased by 18 points from last year

The cut-off for JEE Advanced 2026 was 18 points higher than last year’s 2025.

This year, the general category cut-off average was 25.56 (92 marks) and a subject-wise average of 7.30 (8 marks), while the OBC and EWS category averaged 22.78 percent (82 marks), a subject-wise average of 6.51 percent (7 marks), and the SC/ST category averaged 12.78 percent (46 marks) and a subject-wise average of 3.65 percent (4 marks).

Last year, the general category averaged 20.55 percent (74 marks) and a subject-wise average of 5.83 percent (7 marks).

What branch will be available at which IIT based on which rank?

Expert explained that after the JEE-Advanced results, the biggest concern among students and parents is choosing a college and branch. Every student wants a good IIT and their preferred branch.

Students with an All India Rank under 100 are likely to get admission into Computer Science at top IITs like Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, and Madras.

If we consider the first choice of students, the CS branch at IIT Mumbai remains, which closes in the top 61. After this, students give second priority to CS at Delhi. The third priority is given to Computer Science branches at Kanpur and Madras.

Between 100 and 500 ranks, MNC, AI, and Data Science courses at Delhi and Kanpur can be found, Electrical at the four IITs mentioned above, and CS at Kharagpur.

Between 500 and 1000 ranks, CS courses at BHU, Roorkee, Hyderabad, and Guwahati are likely to be found, and core branches at Mumbai, Delhi, and Kanpur.

Students with ranks between 1000 and 4000 are likely to find Computer Science courses at Gandhinagar, Indore, Rupar, Mandi, Jodhpur, Dhanbad, Patna, and Bhubaneswar, and other branches besides Computer Science at IITs Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, and Kharagpur, such as Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Aerospace, Production, etc.

Students with a rank between 4000 and 8000 can expect to find Civil, Chemical, and Metallurgy courses in Roorkee, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Hyderabad, and Varanasi, lower branches in Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, and Madras, and CS courses in Palakkad, Tirupati, Goa, Dharwad, Bhilai, and Jammu.

Students with a rank between 8000 and 12000 can expect to find core branches in Ropar, Mandi, Indore, Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Bhubaneswar, Patna, and Dhanbad, as well as branches like Biological Science, Naval Architecture, Mining Engineering, Polymer Science, and Ceramic Engineering in the seven older IITs.

Students with a rank between 12,000 and 17,000 can expect to find other branches in newer IITs like Palakkad, Tirupati, Goa, Dharwad, Bhilai, and Jammu.

The chances of getting an IIT branch at the above rank vary according to the category. Furthermore, the 20% female pool quota given to girl students increases the chances of getting a branch at the above IIT even at a lower rank.

Students whose JEE-Advanced All India Rank is very low have the option of applying to IIPE Visakhapatnam and Rajiv Gandhi Petroleum based on JEE-Advanced. The application process for all these institutes has already begun.
