No Physical Reporting for Seat Upgradation

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has announced a series of important reforms for the NEET UG 2026 counselling process, making medical admissions more convenient, transparent, and student-friendly.

The new guidelines aim to reduce unnecessary travel, digitise key counselling procedures, and provide candidates with easier access to essential admission information. These changes will benefit thousands of MBBS and BDS aspirants participating in the upcoming counselling rounds.

MCC simplifies the NEET UG 2026 counselling process

Ahead of the commencement of NEET UG 2026 counselling, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has informed all state counselling authorities about the revised procedures.

The reforms are designed to streamline admissions by shifting several offline processes to an online mode while ensuring a smoother counselling experience for candidates across India.

The Medical Counselling Committee has also advised states and participating institutions to implement the revised guidelines effectively so that aspirants can complete the admission process with minimal inconvenience.

No physical reporting required for seat upgradation

One of the most significant changes introduced this year is the removal of mandatory physical reporting for candidates seeking seat upgradation.

Previously, students who were allotted a seat had to report physically to the assigned medical college even if they planned to participate in subsequent counselling rounds for a better seat. This often resulted in additional travel expenses, accommodation costs, and unnecessary logistical challenges.

Under the new system, candidates who choose the “Willing to Upgrade” option after seat allotment can retain their allotted seat without visiting the college. They can directly participate in the next counselling round while their current seat remains protected in the counselling system.

The move is expected to save time and reduce stress for students and their families.

Online resignation facility introduced

MCC has also digitised the seat resignation process, making it easier for candidates who wish to withdraw from an allotted seat. Eligible candidates can now submit their resignation request directly through the official MCC counselling portal within the prescribed deadline.

There is no requirement to visit the allotted medical college solely for resignation formalities, provided resignation is permitted under the applicable counselling rules. This online facility is expected to make the withdrawal process faster, more transparent, and hassle-free.

NRI quota document submission goes completely online

Candidates applying under the NRI quota for deemed universities will now benefit from an entirely online document submission process.

Earlier, applicants often had to complete additional offline verification procedures, which delayed the admission process.

Under the revised guidelines, all required NRI documents can be uploaded directly through the MCC counselling portal. The digital verification system is expected to speed up document scrutiny while improving transparency and reducing paperwork.

To help students make informed choices during counselling, the Medical Counselling Committee has instructed all state counselling authorities and participating medical colleges to publish accurate and updated admission-related information.

Another orientation programme for participating medical colleges was held on July 27, 2026, with additional sessions planned for both government and private institutions.

These programmes are intended to familiarise officials with the updated counselling procedures and minimise errors during the admission process.
